When we set up White Nightie to sell high quality cotton nightwear, we had not anticipated that some customers would come to us for burial clothes.
However, in recent years we have seen a growth in this market as the trend for ‘green’ funerals and natural burials grows in popularity.
When thinking of natural burial, we tend to think of woodland burial grounds and caskets made from natural materials such as wicker. However, the clothing that the deceased is buried in, is also something people take into consideration, with cotton being 100% natural and biodegradable it is often seen as the perfect choice for a funeral gown.
It is not a subject that people find easy to discuss, and not something we had initially considered.
However, many people find it comforting to know that their loved one is dressed in something elegant and special, and a pretty white cotton nightgown is often seem as befitting for the occasion.
The use of cotton as burial material is nothing new. Fragments of cotton have been located in tombs dating back as far as prehistoric times, with some religions still using just a cotton shroud to this day.
